Safe & Clean

A Visible Difference

We work hard to promote a positive image for Strathcona. Our Clean Streets Initiative helps maintain and improve Strathcona by removing litter from the streets and lanes which encourages cleaner and rejuvenated street fronts. Through partnerships with social enterprises like Coast Foundation and United We Can, we have provided over 2000 hours of street & lane micro cleaning. The Clean Buildings Initiative & Mural Program target graffiti. In the past 6 years we have been able to facilitate the removal of over 9000 graffiti tags. Murals not only help tell a story and beautify the area but are also a proven deterrent for graffiti. The SBIA has invested in nine murals. Ongoing projects with the City of Vancouver helps provide new benches and bus shelters, and improvements to sidewalks

Scam Artists Warning

Vancouver Police are warning the public about a couple of scam artists continuing to operate in the Vancouver area.

We first warned the public about this couple in January of 2010, but they have continued to try their scam both in Vancouver and in surrounding municipalities.  In the past few months, Vancouver Police have received a number of reports about a man and woman who are using a common ploy in an attempt to defraud people.

In most cases, the 40 year old man will approach an employee at a business or school claiming to be a doctor or somehow related to someone in the business. He is very convincing and often knows the names of the business owner or company information in an attempt to sound credible.  He typically asks for cab fare saying his wife needs to get to a hospital and he has locked his keys in his car, or that his car has broken down and he needs money for a tow truck. He will generally ask for anywhere from $20 to $80, promising to return later with the money.  He never does return.  At times a 34 year old woman accompanies him or waits outside.

The man is very convincing and often knows information about the business including names of business owners, and he presents himself very well to appear credible.

Anyone who is approached by this couple should not give them money, and anyone who may be a victim of this scam is asked to contact Vancouver Police or Crime Stoppers.
