The provinces of Ontario and British Columbia have enacted legislation to implement the harmonized sales tax (HST), which will replace existing provincial sales taxes and the federal goods and services tax in those provinces beginning July 1, 2010 and will be administered by the Canada Revenue Agency.
The Canada Revenue Agency offers a number of informative seminars to help ensure that businesses receive the information they need for the transition to the federal administration of the harmonized sales tax in British Columbia. Effective June 1, 2010, the British Columbia Ministry of the Environment (MOE) will implement Protocol 12 which outlines a classification and reporting requirement for contaminated sites and redefines high risk sites. In changing the definition for high risk sites, Protocol 12 could re-label properties currently not included in the existing definition of high risk. Learn more:

The VPD Business Liaison ‘Commercial Crime Quarterly’ is aimed at crime prevention and information for businesses. The Vancouver Police Department's ‘Commercial Crime Quarterly’ is a new initiative aimed at crime prevention and information for businesses via the Business Liason Unit. There will be 4 issues per year which will cover tips, trends and useful information on how to prevent and deter crime.

Small businesses in Canada with a gross revenue of $5 million or less are now eligible for a maximum loan of $500,000 via Industry Canada. This program is to help small businesses access loans for establishing, expanding, modernizing and improving small businesses. It does this by encouraging financial institutions to make their financing available to businesses that may have been previously overlooked due to size
Use an Industry Canada loan to finance up to 90% of
• purchasing or improving land, real property or immovables;
• purchasing leasehold improvements or improving leased property; or
• purchasing or improving new or used equipment.
