A BIA can benefit more than just local retail businesses. All businesses in the area, whether professional, dining, entertainment, finance, or retail, may benefit from the improved local atmosphere and ambience that a successful BIA helps to create. It is the responsibility of each business to build upon the activities of the BIA . An expanded customer base could result from the successful partnership between the activities of the association and individual businesses. “The ultimate goal of the BIA is to provide an environment that supports the role of the area as a place for shopping, dining, entertainment, financial, and professional services.”
Property Owners
BIA initiated improvements and activities may lead to an increase in property values. Improvements help to create and sustain a more vibrant economic environment within the local area. This attracts both commercial and service sector businesses which, in turn, may lead to an increased demand for retail and office space and a subsequent increase in property values.
Non-retailers also benefit
BIA improvements and activities help to create a more vibrant community and a more prosperous local economic environment. A more vibrant community attracts visitors, retains local customers and employees.
Other Benefits
- Increased community interest and pride in the business area.

- Increased cost savings to the membership through improved integration of capital funding, promotion, and other programming activities
How does the Strathcona BIA develop its programs and policies?
The Strathcona BIA seeks input through its committee structure. These committees are open to interested BIA members. Committees then develop programs to address issues as identified by the committee and the BIA members at large. The committees then make recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors have final approval of any policy or program recommendations and is also responsible for budget approval. Currently, the Strathcona BIA has 3 working committees in place:
Marketing & Communications Committee: works on initiatives to market and brand the Strathcona business area
Sustainability Committee: works on initiatives to protect the environment, educates businesses on how they can incorporate green initiatives into their business, works on street enhancement; keeping Strathcona clean and attractive
Government Relations & Safety Committee: works on safety and crime prevention programs
If I am a resident of Strathcona, can I become a member of the BIA?
Membership is only available to businesses (all types of retail, office and other tenants) and commercial and industrial building owners. However, residents are welcome to contact the Strathcona BIA with any concerns or ideas.
How can members become involved with the Strathcona BIA?
The Strathcona BIA encourages members to get involved by participating through one of our 3 volunteer Committees and by attending our BIA events. These committees are forums to discuss common concerns and formulate policies and programs to address specific concerns. The Strathcona BIA is a member-driven organization, so we encourage your involvement.
